About Standing

Every match starts on the feet. In competition a takedown scores 2 points, and whoever lands on top gets to choose the next fight. Beginners often skip standing work, but a reliable takedown or a safe guard pull means you never start a roll on someone else's terms.

The fight is mostly about grips: get yours first, break theirs, and stay square with your head up. From here you can shoot for a single or double leg, throw with a gi grip, snap down to a front headlock, or sit to guard.
